How Do I Fix a Running Toilet?

A running toilet might seem like a minor annoyance, but left unchecked, it can waste a surprising amount of water and drive up your utility bills. If you’ve noticed that your toilet keeps running long after you’ve flushed, you might be tempted to tackle the problem yourself. Before you reach for your toolbox, let’s explore a few common causes and why sometimes it’s best to call in the experts.

What Causes a Running Toilet?

  1. Faulty Flapper: The most common cause of a running toilet is a worn-out or misaligned flapper. The flapper is the rubber valve that controls water flow from the tank to the bowl. If it doesn’t seal properly, water will continue to flow into the bowl.
  2. Chain Issues: The chain connected to the flapper can also cause issues. If it’s too long, it might get tangled, preventing the flapper from closing properly. If it’s too short, it can keep the flapper from fully opening.
  3. Float Problems: The float controls the water level in the tank. If it’s set too high, water will keep flowing into the overflow tube, causing the toilet to run continuously. Adjusting the float might solve the issue.
  4. Fill Valve Malfunction: The fill valve controls the water flow into the tank after a flush. If it’s not working correctly, the tank might overfill or fail to fill at all.

Simple DIY Fixes

If you’re a confident DIYer, there are a few basic steps you can take to try and fix the issue:

1. Inspect the Flapper: Check the flapper for signs of wear or damage. If it’s old, consider replacing it with a new one from your local hardware store, or give us a call! We can get your toilet back into tip top shape the same day!

2. Adjust the Chain: Make sure the chain has the proper length—just enough slack for the flapper to open fully but not so much that it gets tangled.

3. Tweak the Float: Adjust the float to ensure the water level in the tank is below the overflow tube. This might require bending the arm attached to the float or turning a screw, depending on your toilet model.

4. Replace the Fill Valve: If the fill valve is the culprit, you might need to replace it. This is not a fix that we recommend doing at home as it can be very complex. If you think your fill valve needs to be replaced, just give us a call! We’ll be over in no time at all to resolve the problem.
